Inspired Entertainment reported that 1.7 million viewers watched the Virtual Kentucky Derby: Triple Crown Showdown over the weekend. In an online race for all ages, the Secretariat was the big winner, winning the race 47 years after winning the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

The race was presented as part of the Churchill Downs national party (Kentucky Derby at Home) and was televised by NBC. The event was an alternative found to preserve the Kentucky Derby tradition after activities were postponed until September 5th this year.

The virtual race allowed viewers to experience the magic of Derby with the best graphics and animations.

“This was a great event for everyone involved in the traditional Derby day. Horse racing fans saw the best of all time. We had the opportunity to show the realism of our virtual horse race. And, it was all for a good cause, ”said Brooks Pierce, Inspired’s president and chief of operations.

Pierce added: “The virtual sports industry has been popular in Europe for years, but putting together the Kentucky Derby: Triple Crown Showdown for a national television broadcast was a great marketing opportunity to reach the US market.”

In addition to the TV audience, social media was mobilized for the Kentucky Derby at Home, with 91% approval before and after the race. “This was a great example of how virtual sports can fill the gap and bring people together during these difficult times, just like traditional sports,” he said.

Virtual Kentucky Derby raised donations for those affected by the crisis generated by the pandemic

Bill Carstanjen, CEO of Churchill Downs Incorporated, assessed the virtual event.

“While we look forward to the Kentucky Derby 146 in September, our partnership with Inspired Entertainment has not only allowed fans to celebrate the Kentucky Derby at Home, but has also provided us with a platform to raise funds for major aid campaigns for everyone affected by the coronavirus pandemic”, concluded Carstanjen.
