The Australian state of Victoria’s cricket regulator, Cricket Victoria, has renewed its partnership with the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation for another year. The cooperation is part of Cricket Victoria’s attempt to reduce children’s exposure to sports betting promotional content.
This work will be done through initiatives such as the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation’s ‘Join the Club’ campaign, which features cricket players and fans who discourage sports betting associations.
“Clubs and community sports are at the heart of what we do in cricket in the state of Victoria. Through this partnership, we are limiting the amount of publicity seen by young people in our sport and preparing the public to recognize and manage the risks of gaming,” said Nick Cummins, CEO of Cricket Victoria.
Along with Cricket Victoria, the extension involves the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades teams. “Partnering with organizations like Cricket Victoria is great because it gives young people the opportunity to enjoy sport without associating it with the game,” said Shane Lucas, CEO of the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation.
Shane Lucas added: “The first generation of kids to grow up with game advertising is the largest group of sports gamblers in Victoria, with nearly one in three bets placed by 18-24 year olds and the participation of women increasing.”
In addition, the foundation will continue to collaborate with the Cricket Victoria Youth Premier League (YPL), promoting awareness actions for participating teams throughout this season of the tournament. Remembering that the local government has transferred US$ 153 million in the last four years to the entity, created specifically to deal with the challenge of the dangers of excessive gambling to the community.
