Clubs Palmeiras and Athletico are negotiating with at least two bookmakers for the sale of closed TV rights.

The representatives of the companies are talking to the clubs about the possibility of broadcasting the 2022 Brasileirão games and they became the main competitors of SporTV, which is interested in the purchase.

The two teams were the only ones that didn’t close with the Globo channel after TNT gave up broadcasting Nacional from next year. Coritiba, Juventude, Santos, Ceará, Fortaleza and Bahia were also in a similar situation, but they have already signed an agreement with SporTV.

A new transmission agreement template

In the first contacts, the debated model was for the houses to buy the rights, place the transmission on a closed channel, in addition to transmitting on its own platform that would serve to boost bets among users, as in what TNT did.

Under the Principal Law, clubs could negotiate the broadcast of all games they play at home, even if the rivals involved have an agreement with other companies.

It is worth remembering that Athletico and Palmeiras have an agreement with Globo for broadcasting on open TV. On pay-per-view, only Alviverde signed with Premiere, while Curitibanos signed with Jovem Pan.

Bookmakers have increasingly invested in Brazilian football, even without the activity being completely legalized in the country. There is also another specific right for betting streaming that is being negotiated separately.

The partnerships of bookmakers in Brazilian football

According to a survey by lawyer Eduardo Carlezzo, in series A, 19 of the 20 associations are sponsored by bookmakers. Only Cuiabá does not have this type of sponsorship.

In Serie B, there are 14 teams. According to Carlezzo, in 2018, the government of then president Michel Temer sanctioned the law to create rules for the licensing of fixed-quote sports betting operations in Brazil.

In July of this year, Congress corrected a distortion in the collection of taxes on bookmakers. Before taxes were levied on total revenue, without taking into account the prize paid to players, now the charge will be made by the Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR), which is precisely the difference between the gross revenue and the prize paid.

“By doing this, Brazil is in line with the best tax practices in the sector, favoring the legalization of the market and making the proliferation of the black market a little more difficult,” said Carlezzo.
