The significant increase in the number of cases of match-fixing made the government expedite a Provisional Measure (PM) for sports betting.
Yesterday the Ministry of Finance announced that it is finalizing the regulation of fixed odds bets. With this, we are close to having clear and objective rules for operating the sector, which will provide a great opportunity for the Brazilian economy.
In addition, according to a publication on the Metrópoles portal, the government is considering creating an agency focused on monitoring the sports betting market, seeking to guarantee the security and integrity of the sector.
Government considers creating agency to monitor sports betting market
The federal government is working on the last details of the provisional measure (PM) that will regulate the sports betting market in the country. According to the person responsible for writing the MP at the Ministry of Finance, special advisor José Manssur, the creation of an integrity agency to monitor these bets is “on the horizon”, but it should not be created immediately.
When participating in an event on sports integrity, this Thursday morning (11/5), in Brasília (DF), Manssur was asked whether the creation of the agency will be foreseen in the PM to be edited by the Lula (PT) government, when to which he replied:
“Not in the provisional measure, because a provisional measure cannot create an agency, but it is something that is on our horizon, it is on our radar and we understand it to be very important”.
Manssur avoided dealing with the issue date of the MP, stating that it is necessary for the text to “go through its procedures”. Behind the scenes, the measure is expected to be signed by the President of the Republic in the coming days.
The PM will give government agencies tools to edit thematic ordinances, which should deal with advertising rules, accreditation of bookmakers in Brazil (grant value, necessary documents, etc.) and definition of means of payment to avoid money laundering.
