The Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) ordered the provisional suspension of eight players involved in Operation Maximum Penalty, an action carried out by the Goiás Public Ministry (MP-GO) that investigates cases of match-fixing and sports betting. President Otávio Noronha’s determination lasts for 30 days, according to reports published by the portal ‘ge.globo’.
Defender Eduardo Bauermann, from Santos, is among the suspended athletes. On Tuesday, May 16, the São Paulo club decided to suspend the athlete’s contract. In addition, the names of Paulo Miranda and Tota, who were playing for Juventude during the games in question, were also mentioned.
Among the eight players, six were formally accused by the Public Ministry of Goiás (MP-GO). The other two players, defender Kevin Lomonaco, from Bragantino, and lateral Moraes (ex-Juventude), admitted their participation in the scheme and became witnesses in the case. In total, the MP denounced 15 athletes mentioned in the Maximum Penalty Operation – being one of the biggest denouncements in a match-fixing case.
The athletes will be accused based on articles 243 and 243-A of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD), which address the conduct of “deliberately acting in a way that is harmful to the defending team”. The punishment for this infraction includes a fine that can reach R$ 100,000, as well as a suspension that varies from one to two years. In case of recurrence, the penalty may result in exclusion from sports practice, in addition to another fine of up to R$ 100,000.
