Faced with the scandal in Brazilian football, with several players from Serie A clubs investigated and denounced for participating in match-fixing schemes, Vasco da Gama promoted a lecture with its entire squad to explain this type of situation.
Soon after, using the same tactic, the club brought together players from the under-20 and under-17 teams to approach sports betting. The meeting took place along the same lines as the main team.
Vasco has been dealing with the matter internally so that there is no doubt about the athletes’ posture.
The lecture was led by Clarissa Arteiro, Compliance coordinator at SAF. Among the subjects contained in the booklet developed by the club’s Legal Department, topics such as the consequences of match-fixing and what to do if approached by someone with a proposal to provoke any situation on the field were addressed. Vasco must be immediately informed.
Clarissa Arteiro talked to the young people about the club’s rules regarding betting.
Vasco made it clear that it does not allow athletes or other club employees to place bets on football matches, especially when the team itself is involved, even on behalf of third parties. Some measures mentioned:
- Do not place sports bets;
- Notify the club as soon as players try to contact them;
- Not to provide internal club information to third parties;
- Under no circumstances indicate that they bet on themselves.
Operation Maximum Penalty
The Public Ministry, through “Operation Penalty Maximum II”, has already identified 120 players suspected of involvement in a game manipulation scheme. Seven have already been denounced, among them defender Eduardo Bauermann, from Santos. So far, no Cruzmaltino player has been investigated.
