The sports betting CPI approved requirements that invited two Brazilian players who work in Europe to testify: Lucas Paquetá, from West Ham, and Luiz Henrique, from Betis.
However, the athletes did not respond to contacts made by the Chamber of Deputies commission.
According to the Panorama Esportivo column on Portal Uol this Thursday, 30, parliamentarians must vote on two summons requests for athletes to be heard as suspects.
The request for a statement was made by Deputy Felipe Carreras (PSB/PE), rapporteur for the CPI. He does not rule out the possibility of players testifying by videoconference.
The invitations to Paquetá and Luiz Henrique were approved last week, after information was revealed about their alleged involvement in a betting scheme.
SportRadar has issued a report of a possible matched bet involving the athletes in matches for their respective teams on March 12th. That is, matches still valid for the 2022 / 2023 season.
According to the company’s statement, accounts linked to people close to Paquetá would have bet that he and the Betis striker would be warned with yellow cards. What really happened.
The bets were made in Duque de Caxias, through the Betway website, which sponsors the English team.
Due to this alleged involvement of Paquetá with the betting scheme, the English Football Association (FA) launched an investigation.
He was also barred from the first call-up of the Brazilian national team made by coach Fernando Diniz for the first two games of the World Cup Qualifiers.
Luiz Henrique was also left out of the list of athletes coach Ramon Menezes, from the Olympic team. The under-23 team will face Morocco in two friendlies on the next Fifa date.
sports betting CPI
The sports betting CPI is chaired by Deputy Julio Arcoverde (PP-PI) and reported by Deputy Felipe Carreras (PSB-PE). Work began on May 17 with an initial term of 120 days, but this period was extended.
The initiative to create the collegiate was based on investigations carried out by the Public Ministry of Goiás that raised suspicions of manipulation in games of the Brazilian Championship last year, as well as in state games this year.
Several players related to the scheme have already been judged by sports justice and have been punished with fines, suspensions and even banishment from football.
