A bill that establishes that the Federal Government can recommend the interruption of sports competitions under suspicion of manipulation of results has advanced in the Chamber of Deputies.
The proposal was approved by the Sports Commission and went to the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ). The project is by Representative Julio Cesar Ribeiro (Republicans/DF) and aims to add a paragraph to article 177 of the General Sports Law.
The suggested description is as follows:
“The federal public administration must follow the monitoring, together with the sports organizations described in the previous paragraph, and in case of suspicion of manipulation or attempted interference in the results of sports competitions, which may suggest the suspension of the championship, removal of athletes, application of fines and other effective measures in the case”.
In his justification, the deputy claimed that “we note that the public administration must act more firmly in monitoring and monitoring possible interference in the results of competitions. Being able to act and avoid the continuation of undue actions”.
However, Riberto did not mention how this suggestion of stopping the championships will happen. According to O Globo, sports organizations have autonomy in relation to their events. This condition is provided for in the Federal Constitution.
Suspicion of match-fixing in Brazilian football
It is worth noting that this is yet another measure taken by Congress following a series of allegations of match-fixing in Brazilian football.
This situation was discovered by the Public Ministry of Goiás (MP-GO), giving rise to Operation Maximum Penalty.
Authorities investigated a group of criminals who enticed players to commit irregularities in matches in Series A and B of the Brasileirão 2022, as well as in games in this year’s State Championships.
Players received amounts for premeditatedly receiving yellow or red cards, in addition to committing penalties.
The investigation also resulted in the Sports Betting CPI, in addition to sports punishment for several athletes involved. Thus, players were punished with fines, suspensions and bans.
Recently, FIFA began extending these penalties. In other words, athletes will not be able to play both in Brazil and in clubs abroad until the end of their punishments.
