Sports betting turnover in Washington DC was $35.4 million in May, a 183% increase from May 2023, setting a new record for the District.

Revenue was $5.4 million, also a new record, and tax receipts reached $544,600.

Record in sports betting

FanDuel‘s new sports betting app for the DC Lottery dominated the market, taking 84% of Washington DC sports bets.

The DC Lottery recorded bets of US$30.6 million, with:

  • $29.7 million from new FanDuel app
  • $898,671 from old GambetDC app

Caesars came next, with bets worth $2.7 million. BetMGM got $1.6 million.

The Washington DC Council’s 2025 budget paved the way for a competitive online betting market. Thus, this ended up affecting FanDuel‘s monopoly position, which was the only platform available throughout the city.

The Budget Support Act still needs Mayor Muriel Bowser’s signature and a 30-day passive analysis by Congress.

So, this will allow BetMGM (Nationals Park) and Caesars Sportsbook (Capital One Arena) to expand their current offerings beyond their physical sportsbooks and respective exclusion zones.
