Portugal‘s sports betting market saw an improvement in platform revenue in the second quarter of 2024, but revenue from land-based operations declined during the same period compared to the previous year.

Sports betting exceeds 450 million euros

The Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ), the country’s gaming regulatory body, reported a 27.1% year-on-year increase in online gross revenue to €261.8 million (Q2 2023: 205.9 million euros), generated by 17 licensed operations.

Of total online revenue, SRIJ stated that 60.5% came from gaming operations, while 39.5% came from sports betting.

Gaming revenue was €158.5 million at the end of the quarter, an increase of 29.9% year-on-year (2023: €122 million), with a betting volume of €4.37 billion (2023: €3.24 billion).

Slot machines had the highest share during the second quarter at 82.3%, followed by French roulette, blackjack, dice games and poker.

Meanwhile, sports betting revenue increased by 23.1% to €103.3 million (2023: €84 million), with betting volume of €462.3 million (2023: €357.6 million) .

Football is still players’ favorite

Football betting had the largest share of sports bets during the period, at 69.3%, followed by tennis, basketball and other sports.

With 17 licensed online operators, SRIJ noted that total players increased by 16.2% year-on-year to 4.4 million. But the increase was 3.5% compared to the previous quarter.

New registrations grew 51.2% year-on-year to 287,600. But self-exclusion increased by 41.5% compared to the second quarter of 2023, reaching 256,900.

As for land operations, the SRIJ reported that revenue fell 4.5% compared to the previous year. It reached €63.7 million (2023: €66.8 million), but increased by 1.3% compared to the previous quarter.

By game type, slots generated 78.41% of all land-based gaming revenue during the quarter. The other casino games filling the remaining 21.59%. Roulette had the highest share of these other casino games, at 36.5%, followed by baccarat, dice games, blackjack and poker.
