Recently, online betting companies, known as bets, have intensified their efforts to influence the Federal Government. This occurred after a crucial decision by Minister André Mendonça, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

He ordered the prohibition of these companies’ operations in Brazil without a national license. As a result, these companies are seeking the reopening of the deadline that would allow them to continue operating while they await the analysis of their registration applications. However, the Ministry of Treasury remains firm in its position against this idea.

In 2024, the Brazilian government opened a period for bets to request operating licenses. During the request analysis period, companies were able to operate on a provisional basis.

However, from January 1, 2025, only those with approved licensing were able to continue their activities. To speed up this process, technicians from the Ministry of Treasury held a task force at the end of December, with the aim of completing the analysis of the companies that submitted their requests in the first registration window.

Claiming bets for a new deadline

Bets are now demanding a new deadline. This additional time would allow them to continue operating while awaiting a definitive response to their license applications. However, many of these companies face difficulties, such as the lack of essential documents or issues related to the suitability of their shareholders. This often results in them being denied the permits they seek.

Before the STF‘s decision, some companies tried to guarantee their operations based on authorizations issued by the Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj). However, Minister Mendonça‘s decision determined that federal regulations prevail, thus restricting the use of state licenses.

This case gained prominence due to the growing interest and popularity of sports betting in Brazil. A notable example is the company Esportes da Sorte, sponsor of renowned football clubs such as Corinthians, Grêmio, Bahia and Ceará, which sought to operate with a Loterj license.

The situation highlights the process of adapting betting companies to the new rules in force in Brazil. Meanwhile, the betting industry continues to expand its presence and influence in the country, attracting more and more attention.
