In the last four months, between October 2024 and January 2025, the Prizes and Betting Secretariat (SPA) of the Ministry of Treasury ordered the blocking of approximately 9,600 illegal betting sites in Brazil. On the other hand, only 76 companies have a license to operate legally in the country.
Specifically, 70 are authorized by the SPA, while another six operate under court orders. Furthermore, each of these companies can maintain up to three different betting domains.
In October last year, the first list presented more than 2,000 blocked domains and was promptly sent to the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel). Then, a new list with 1,443 domains was sent at the end of the same month.
Therefore, in December, the Treasury strengthened its collaboration with Anatel by signing a Technical Cooperation Agreement. Thus, the main objective is to speed up and increase the effectiveness of blocking sites that illegally promote fixed-odd betting.
As reported by the Ministry of Treasury, this measure also seeks to establish an efficient flow of information exchange, reducing operational costs and strengthening supervision.
The betting regulation scenario in Brazil
The regulation of betting appears as an essential initiative, as highlighted by authorities and sector representatives. The concern is about the possibility of gamblers resorting to illegal activities without clear rules.
The regulated sports betting and online gaming market officially began operating from January 1, 2025. Therefore, it is necessary to meet certain requirements to operate legally in Brazil.
These conditions include the mandatory use of the “.bet.br” domain and the identification of bettors by CPF and facial recognition. At the same time, regulations require that betting be transparent; bettors need to know the potential prizes in advance.
Furthermore, companies must strictly follow rules against illegal practices, such as money laundering. This set of measures reinforces the commitment to a fair and safe environment for everyone involved.
