The Ministry of Treasury, through the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA-MF), notified companies authorized to operate fixed odds bets in Brazil. The body demands effective actions against financial crimes in the sector, such as money laundering and terrorist financing (PLD/FT).
According to the letter, operators have until March 17, 2025 to respond to the Secretariat. However, notifications were issued both to betting operating agents and to those operating under court decisions.
According to the SPA, companies must prepare each PLD/FT in detail, and make clear the criteria and actions planned for different occurrences.
The measure follows the guidelines of Law No. 14,790/2023 and SPA/MF Ordinance No. 1,143/2024. Such legislation requires effective actions to prevent financial crimes in the betting sector. Failure to comply with these determinations may result in sanctions.
The letter also highlights that, on February 12th, SPA held a webinar on good practices for reporting suspicious activities to the Financial Activities Control Council (Coaf).
Betting companies and the National Strategy to Combat Corruption and Money Laundering (ENCCLA)
Since November 2024, SPA has been part of Enccla. The body brings together several entities from the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary branches and is responsible for strengthening actions to combat financial crimes, in addition to improving sector regulation.
The inclusion of SPA in Enccla and the participation of betting companies reinforce the commitment of everyone involved in establishing a more transparent and secure betting market.
