The betting sector in Brazil generates approximately R$120 billion per year, according to recent estimates. In 2024, the market underwent a regulatory process, at the same time that the number of bettors grew significantly.

The sector’s growth was driven by a 135% increase in just one year, according to information from DataHub. However, the pursuit of responsible gambling remains a priority, as many bettors still compromise essential resources, which can result in debt and dependence.

What was the sports betting scenario like in 2024?

In 2024, sports betting has consolidated itself as a billion-dollar sector. Companies in the sector occupied a large part of the advertising space and sponsored almost all of the country’s main football clubs. At the same time, regulation had impacts, leading some companies to stop operating in Brazil.

Despite this, the number of bettors continued to rise, as did the profits of the companies in operation. This exponential growth highlighted the strength of the sector in the Brazilian economy.

What is the profile of the sports bettor in Brazil?

A survey carried out by Instituto Locomotiva identified the profile of bettors in the country in 2024. According to the study, 53% of users are men, while 47% are women. The age group between 30 and 49 years old is the most representative among bettors.

Furthermore, more than half of users were new bettors, that is, they started playing from 2024 onwards. On the other hand, 45% of those interviewed reported having suffered some financial loss when betting.

How has regulation impacted the betting market in Brazil?

The sports betting regulation officially came into force on January 1, 2025. The new rules establish that only companies authorized by the federal government can operate in the country. The Ministry of Treasury publishes, on its official website, a list of authorized platforms, which is updated as new companies adapt to the requirements.

To obtain the license, operators must pay a fee of R$30 million and adopt measures that encourage responsible gambling. Furthermore, in February 2025, a new inspection fee was implemented, with variable amounts depending on the sector’s expenses and costs.

However, illegal websites and abusive practices still operate in the market, requiring greater attention from users. Platforms like Aposta Hub offer support to help players assess the credibility of companies.

What are the sports most bet on by Brazilians?

According to research, more than 85% of Brazilians prefer to bet on football, the most popular sport in the country. Other sports, such as volleyball, basketball and motor racing, also record significant volumes of bets. Furthermore, online casino games have gained ground in the market in recent years.

Will the sports betting market continue to grow in Brazil?

Since 2021, online betting platforms have recorded growth of 734%, according to data from DataHub. In 2024, spending on online betting in Brazil reached R$100 billion, a value proportionally higher than that recorded in the United States.

With high investments in advertising and growing interest from users, the sector has become attractive for companies. With regulation, profits continue to grow, and the number of gamblers is constantly increasing.

When treated as just a form of entertainment, sports betting can be a legitimate way to have fun. However, with the continued expansion of the sector, it is essential that users exercise caution and self-control to avoid losses and personal problems.
