In the first 60 days of 2025, more than 30 million visits to illegal betting sites were recorded in Brazil. Although they represent less than 1% of the 2 billion visits to the legal market in the same period, these platforms moved approximately R$350 million, according to estimates by Aposta Legal.

The financial projection was based on data from the regulated market. Considering the expected movement of R$240 billion for legal bets in 2025 and the 1.7 billion accesses registered in January, it was possible to establish a relationship between traffic and monetary volume.

Applying this proportion to the 30 million accesses to blocked platforms, we arrived at an estimate of R$350 million generated by illegal websites.

Challenges in monitoring illegal betting

The numbers highlight the complexity of monitoring a digital market that is constantly changing. Between 2024 and February 2025, the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA), linked to the Ministry of Treasury, blocked more than 10 thousand domains considered irregular.

However, a survey by UOL indicates that at least 80% of these addresses remain active, either maintaining the original content, redirecting users or reemerging under new URLs.

For authorities and operators, the loss goes beyond the loss of revenue. Every real spent on the illegal market represents a risk to the consumer, who is left without legal guarantees. Therefore, efficient monitoring and user awareness are essential to contain the growth of these platforms.

Common characteristics in blocked website names

The Ministry of Treasury‘s list reveals that most blocked betting sites follow a specific pattern. A frequent indicator of illegality is the excessive presence of numbers in the platform names.

Of the more than 7,000 domains blocked as of December, 5,825 (76.7%) contained numbers in their names. Of these, 3,595 (47.3%) began with numbers and 3,423 (45%) ended with numbers.

Names that have an excessive amount of numbers or that do not refer to well-known brands are more likely to be illegal platforms.

Furthermore, many domains are associated with the same brand, varying only by the inclusion of numbers or small changes in the letters.

For example, sites like win96q.com and win96p.com, despite minimal differences, link to similar content.

Certain terms also recur among blocked sites. The word “win” appears in 835 domains (11% of the total), while “777” is present in 723 (9.5%). Other common terms include Casino in 174 sites and “888” in 146. These patterns help identify suspicious platforms.
