The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) lead in Portugal the distribution of funds from the Special Online Gambling Tax (IEJO) in 2024, with a total of 44.7 million euros collected through betting.
This amount shows an increase of 8.6 million euros compared to 2023, demonstrating the growing impact of betting in Portugal on the financing of national sport.
The FPF received 33.85 million euros, an increase of 6.54 million euros compared to 2023. The LPFP received 10.85 million euros, an increase of 2.1 million euros compared to the previous year. Football represents 72.3% of the total amount distributed by the sports sector, which is 61.8 million euros.
Values for other sports:
- Tennis received 9.7 million euros, corresponding to 15.7% of the total.
- Basketball received 4.57 million euros, representing 7.4% of the total.
- The Portuguese Surfing Federation received just 5 euros and 21 cents.
- Skating, the Portuguese Paralympic Committee (CPP) and the Portuguese Sports Confederation (CDP) did not receive any funding.
Growth in the distribution of betting funds in Portugal
The distribution of funds from the IEJO increased by 11 million euros from 2023 to 2024. The amounts distributed by the IEJO are essential for the development of sport in Portugal. The CDP advocated a new way of distributing these amounts.
