The Sports Committee of the Chamber of Representatives recently established the Permanent Subcommittee for the Regulation of Sports Betting (Subapost). This structure is the result of Request No. 34/2024, presented in April by Congressman Luciano Vieira (Republicanos-RJ).
According to Vieira: “The objective [of the subcommittee] is to consolidate positions and provide a response to the population regarding the evident scandals of fraud and manipulation in sports results”.
By taking this initiative, parliamentarians seek to directly address the rise of gambling and the risks of corruption.
Representative Caio Vianna (PSD-RJ) leads the subcommittee. In addition, Maurício do Vôlei (PL-MG) and Júlio Arcoverde (PP-PI) make up the group as members.
Among the substitutes are Douglas Viegas (União-SP), Augusto Puppio (MDB-AP) and Luciano Vieira.
Subapost‘s main role will be to examine proposals for regulating the sector and also to debate control, inspection and prevention mechanisms against fraud in sports competitions.
Bill in the Chamber against betting on isolated events receives favorable opinion
Bill 2,842/2023, reported by deputy Luciano Vieira (Republicanos-RJ), received a favorable opinion from the Chamber’s Sports Committee.
The text, authored by representatives Ricardo Ayres (Republicanos-TO) and Daniel Agrobom (PL-GO), seeks to prohibit betting on individual events during matches, such as corners, fouls and cards. These events are more vulnerable to match-fixing.
Luciano Vieira, in his report, states: “the essence of the bill initiative is to prohibit betting on individual actions or conduct during football matches, restricting them to the number of goals scored and the results of the matches.
This aims to reduce the incidence of unsportsmanlike behavior on the part of athletes, referees or any other person with significant influence on the conduct of games.”
The objective of this project is to preserve the integrity of the disputes, given the increase in sports betting in the country.
