In Brazil, 51.2% of people who place sports bets online have a family income of up to R$4,554. This statement was the result of a study carried out by the technology company Idwall, in partnership with Opinion Box.

The researchers’ work also showed that only 4% of bettors earn more than R$22,770. However, the majority (43.1%) invest between R$10 and R$60 monthly in online betting, while 7.3% spend more than R$300.

In the analysis of the cut related to the educational profile of bettors, the research revealed that 33% of them have completed higher education. Of these, 22.5% have postgraduate degrees and 20.8% have secondary education.

In terms of frequency, the study points to variety. According to Idwall, 38.7% place one to five bets per month, while 14.3% place more than R$50 bets per month.

According to the company, the profile of Brazilian gamblers reflects the country’s economic reality. Financial instability and low purchasing power have led many to see betting as a way to supplement their income.

This would be leading to an increase in interest in online betting. However, the activity is legally defined by the Treasury as a form of entertainment restricted to adults.

Betting only on platforms licensed in Brazil

Despite this, it is necessary to be aware of betting fraud, warns Idwall. The study found that 18% of bettors have already been victims of fraud or scams, equivalent to around 10 million people in the country. In addition, 10% of users had their accounts hacked, representing 5.2 million bettors affected.

Therefore, it is worth noting that only regulated companies can currently operate in Brazil. These licensed platforms use the domain ‘bet.br’, which is exclusive to websites that are duly compliant with local regulations. The Ministry of Treasury has requested the blocking of 12,000 irregular websites in recent months.

The survey was conducted through online interviews with 1,015 Brazilian bettors, and considered participants from all regions of the country, over 18 years old, who had registered on at least one betting platform in the last six months and placed at least one bet during that period. The survey’s margin of error is 3.1 percentage points.
