Liam Carter, 34, from England, found a winning lottery ticket belonging to his mother Anne three days after her death. The man was sorting through his recently deceased mother’s personal belongings when he made the discovery.
The ticket was found in a folded envelope in a kitchen drawer where the mother used to store her lottery tickets. On the envelope, she had written the following: “Saturday’s draw — don’t forget!” The son ignored the ticket, but decided to scan it with the National Lottery app.
When the ticket was read, the app confirmed that the ticket was a winner, but that he would need to contact the lottery center. When he contacted the lottery by phone, it was confirmed that Anne had matched five numbers in the draw, with only the “lucky stars” missing. Despite this, the prize won was £18,403 (around R$120,000 at the current exchange rate).
According to local media, Carter was shocked when he was informed. “I just froze. I think I was silent on the phone. It didn’t seem real. She’s never won anything big in her life — and now this,” he told local media, visibly emotional about the whole situation.
With the lottery winnings, Carter will put a down payment on an apartment
According to Carter, his mother always insisted that if she ever won, the money would go to him. Although Anne never found out she had won the lottery, Liam described the ticket she found as a final gift from her, full of emotion and affection.
Therefore, the money received will be used to make a down payment on a property, something the mother always dreamed of her son achieving. “She always wanted me to have my own home. Now I will make that dream come true with something that came from her,” he added.
