The investigation into the use of online betting companies for money laundering (Bets CPI) will have its work extended by 45 days. According to the parliamentary inquiry committee, which is responsible for the investigation, the CPI will run until June.

The request for extension was read last Wednesday (30) by the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, and will be published soon.

The request for an extension is a request from the President of the CPI, Senator Dr. Hiran (PP-RR). Without the extra deadline, the CPI would have to end its activities next Wednesday.

According to the senator’s argument, in February the CPI’s activities were suspended for 63 days and, therefore, more time would be needed.

Bets CPI

The Senate’s CPI on Bets was created with the aim of investigating the possible association of betting companies with criminal organizations for money laundering. Also, the use of influencers in the advertising of these activities and the impact of online betting on the budget of Brazilian families.

In addition to diagnoses of the size of the problem and possible indictments, the final report will also include proposals to curb gambling addiction. The problem has been damaging mental health and leaving many people in debt. This is what the CPI rapporteur, Soraya Thronicke, from Podemos in Mato Grosso do Sul, anticipates.

According to the senator, legislation in other countries is being analyzed in search of practices such as facial biometrics and other technologies. The goal is to make player registration more rigorous and make it more difficult for children and teenagers to access the system, for example.
