The Federal Government began the debate with components of the National Congress on a bill to regulate bookmakers and received a positive signal that the measure would have support from the Legislative.
According to CNN, the Institutional Relations Secretariat team, led by Minister Alexandre Padilha, is already talking to congressmen about the possibility of moving forward with the proposal and received enough support for the intention to regulate the activity of bookmakers.
However, this support does not represent agreement with the project that is already underway in Congress and releases gambling in casinos, bingo, slot machines, among other modalities.
Also according to CNN, the government’s economic team is evaluating the issue of a provisional measure to regulate the practice of sports betting, which is growing rapidly in the country. Several bookmakers have entered into partnerships with football clubs, in addition to relevant championships, such as the Copa do Brasil.
Among the actions studied is a provisional measure to regulate the functioning of the sector in Brazil. According to estimates by members of the government, this market could generate significant revenue growth, around R$5 billion to R$6 billion.
Gabriel Galípolo is responsible for drawing up the regulations for bookmakers currently
The Executive Secretary of the Treasury, Gabriel Galípolo, is currently responsible for preparing the measure together with the Federal Revenue Service. The expectation is that the text will be forwarded to the Ministry of Sport in the coming days.
Sports betting has been allowed in Brazil since December 2018, when a law on the practice was sanctioned by then-president Michel Temer. The regulation for the operation of the sector has not yet been formalized.
The Lula government accelerated the process in the midst of an investigation that athletes from Serie B of the Brazilian Championship would be involved in a match-fixing scheme aimed at ensuring winnings in bets.
Manipulation occurred from penalties committed by players in the first half of the games. Initially, three games from the last round of the 2022 Series B are being investigated.
