With the regulation of sports betting getting closer and closer, Flamengo’s general and legal vice president, Rodrigo Dunshee, used his Twitter to position himself after the demonstration by the CBF and the big clubs in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
The manager of Flamengo published the following: “This week it became clear that the clubs want to participate in the process that will regulate sports betting in Brazil. Gambling can only work in the country if the government regulates it. But that is not enough, in our view. The bets are placed on our sporting events, our brands, symbols, images, etc are used… in addition, it is our activity that is subject to harmful collateral risks”.
“It has to be worth it for the clubs, otherwise we can come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter. It scares me a little to hear some people saying that the government could cannibalize clubs’ brands against their will, giving it away for free to betting companies. It’s 2023, that doesn’t exist anymore. Today it’s a win-win situation and we’re sure we’ll reach a good conclusion”, added Dunshee.
CBF wants greater participation in the profits generated by sports betting
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) presented its demands to the Ministry of Finance for changes in the provisional measure for sports betting in Brazil. The entity is seeking to increase its share in the profits generated by betting, proposing that the percentage allocated to sports entities that allow the use of their brands by bookmakers to increase from 1.63% to 4% of gross revenue.
In addition, the CBF wants the financial payment to be recognized as remuneration for the use of club and championship brands, and not a transfer of public money, which would avoid inspections by public bodies.
The CBF movement follows the position adopted by the main clubs in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which also want greater participation in the process.
Clubs want to participate in the regulatory process
In a joint note, Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo, Vasco da Gama, Corinthians, Palmeiras, São Paulo and Santos, expressed concern about the proximity of the regulation of sports betting by provisional measure, due to the importance of companies in the sector for their revenues from marketing.
In addition, the teams want to be consulted and have space to propose improvements in the regulation. It is worth noting that most clubs in the Brasileirão 2023 and Série B already have partnerships with sports betting brands.
