Google will require authorization from the Ministry of Treasury to release sports betting advertisements from so-called “bets” (betting houses). As of this Monday (30), this change will come into force, reflecting new regulatory requirements in Brazil.

On September 17, the Ministry of Treasury published an ordinance that blocks irregular betting platforms operating in Brazil from October onwards.

Betting market enters a new phase in Brazil

Therefore, only companies that have requested authorization from the government and that are already active will be able to continue operating between October and the end of December.

The ordinance’s main focus is to combat betting addiction. Based on this, Google announced that it will only allow advertising from platforms that obtain a specific certification.

Additionally, Google said horse racing and lottery operators will also need to recertify to continue advertising.

But, on the other hand, bets will no longer be able to advertise after September 30th. This decision follows the policy of combating irregularities and seeks more transparency in the sector.

Central Bank warns about defaults and digital wallets

Recently, Roberto Campos Neto, president of the Central Bank, commented that the institution is aware of the risks of default caused by the increase in betting and online gaming in Brazil.

Furthermore, Campos Neto highlighted the concern about the use of digital wallets, such as PIX, to mediate payments related to betting.

The federal government is also studying actions to prevent Bolsa Família beneficiaries from using the resource for online betting. Among the measures under analysis are:

  • Blocking the program card for this type of payment
  • The government may transfer ownership of the benefit if it identifies misuse

Therefore, the new rules aim to protect the population and regulate a sector that has grown exponentially in Brazil. The online sports betting scenario continues to change and the impact of these measures will be observed in the coming months.
