The Bets CPI will hear the president of the Brazilian Psychiatric Association (ABP), Antônio Geraldo da Silva, this Tuesday (1), at 11 am. The president of the ABP will detail to the senators the effects of gambling addiction.

Furthermore, as a psychiatrist recognized for his work in the field of mental health, Antônio Geraldo da Silva is the coordinator and creator of the national Yellow September campaign, a pioneer in suicide prevention in Brazil.

He emphasizes that the expansion of this market in Brazil has caused significant impacts on the mental health and economic well-being of Brazilian families.

The Bets CPI was initiated in November and is chaired by Senator Dr. Hiran (PP-RR) and rapporteur is Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS).

The summoning

Senator Damares Alves (Republicans-DF) requested the presence of the psychiatrist, emphasizing the “importance of addressing the contradictory effects of gambling addiction, which have become a growing concern, both in the social sphere and in the field of public health.”

Damares Alves also highlights that it is essential to listen to professionals with expertise in the analysis, prevention and treatment of disorders related to compulsive gaming.

The senator believes that the contribution of specialists in the field of psychiatry and mental health will be essential. She also predicts that this contribution will allow for a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by patients suffering from these addictions.

Damares Alves wrote in Request 207/2024: “The expansion of this market in Brazil, notably after the popularization of online betting, has caused significant impacts on the mental health and economic well-being of Brazilian families. Thus, requiring a more structured and well-founded response from the legislative branch.”
