UK Gambling Commission announces significant rise in online betting

The UK Gambling Commission recorded a considerable increase in the local online gambling and betting market, following the announcement of industry figures for the period from March to October this year.

The data show how the new coronavirus pandemic impacted the UK industry, involving both the online and in-person segments. The statistics were provided by the UK Gambling Commission.

The online market saw a 29% monthly increase in gross gaming income (GGY) and a 7% increase in active accounts in October.

However, there was also a 12% increase in the number of bets, as well as in active players (+ 7%). The main element tends to be the increase in the operator’s margins.

In addition, some metrics, such as the amount of sports betting, have risen for Licensed Operators. The modality grew by 9% in GGY, reaching £ 204 million. According to the UK Gambling Commission, this movement is “volatile due to the influence of the results of sporting events”.

The number of customers who spend more than 60 minutes in online slot games grew by 12% in September and October, even though the average session time is around 21 minutes.

UK Gambling Commission reinforces guidelines for online providers

The UK entity commented that “it continues to monitor as the country responds to various levels of restrictions” and “will remain vigilant in the face of new national blockades announced in recent weeks”.

The entity recently communicated with online operators to reinforce the guidelines announced in May, which determined the need to improve accessibility checks and restrictions on bonus offers.
