Rivalry has filed its license application with the Ontario Gambling and Alcohol Commission (AGCO), and said it expects to offer both sports betting and its Rushlane casino content to Ontario customers in the first half of 2022.
Steven Salz, co-founder and chief executive of Rivalry, said he was particularly enthusiastic about filing the license application, as the company is headquartered in Toronto.
“As a Toronto-based company and a long-time member of the technology ecosystem here, we couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to finally deliver our amazing product and brand experiences in our own ‘backyard,'” said Salz.
“We applaud the Ontario government for its leadership in developing a robust licensing regime for gaming and betting.
“Ontario’s igaming framework has the potential to set an international precedent for how to successfully launch an open licensing model in North America, protect consumers through prudent responsible gaming practices, and attract and create thousands of high-paying tech jobs in North America Ontario,” added Salz.
Ontario’s Regulatory Process
Ontario published its draft rules for the regulated online gambling and betting markets in August, just after Canada legalized single-event betting before releasing the rules finalized last month.
The state’s sports betting rules include a series of marketing restrictions and a requirement that operators register with an official integrity body such as the International Integrity Betting Association (IBIA).
The game rules, however, include a number of product restrictions, such as a minimum spin time for slots.
However, concerns have been raised about the validity of liberalizing gambling in Ontario, due to concerns that the licensing model would mean that the provincial government would not “conduct and administer” online gambling as required by Canada’s penal code.
