The Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS) sent 300 suspicious bet alerts and notifications to members during the first quarter of 2022, a small decrease from the same period last year.
Of these alerts in the three months to March 31, 243 were raised before a sporting event, 12 during a match or game, and the remaining 45 after the event has ended. The total was reduced from 323 in the same period last year.
The GLMS said that 185 of those alerts were classified as a “green notification”, which refers to alerts based on suspicious odds movements that could later be explained.
About 65 were mid-level alerts, while only 14 were code red, which pertain to more serious alerts, such as specific allegations of fraud. Another 36 alerts were classified as ‘other’ and included requests for information from members and partners.
Football received the most betting alerts, with a total of 176 notifications during the period, followed by basketball with 57, ice hockey with 35, eSports with 23, six for tennis and three for volleyball.
Geographically, 170 of the alerts were for events in Europe, 61 in Asia, 36 in South America, 22 in Africa, nine in North America and one in Oceania. A single alert was also recorded for an international event.
The main reason for the alerts was the news related to the team, which was responsible for 112 alerts. Other reasons included significant changes in odds, which led to 62 alerts, 31 for the wrong opening price, 24 for changes in odds that required further investigation, and 15 related to motivation.
Alerts are raised when irregular betting patterns are detected, after which GLMS consults with members to investigate the reasons behind the changes in odds. When the defaults cannot be justified, GLMS then produces a formal report.
During the first quarter, 10 reports were submitted, seven of which were developed and released by GLMS following internal investigation and significant alert. Another three reports were produced following a specific request from a member or partner to support the collection of internal investigation information.
