The bookmaker Esportes da Sorte has just announced a program, ‘Cartão Verde’, in conjunction with state federations to grant scholarships to women who dream of acting as soccer referees.
By funding the refereeing course, the sports betting company wants to encourage women’s entry and power in sport and highlight them in the role of greater authority on the playing field. A study carried out by Esportes da Sorte indicates that of the 268 referees on the current staff of the Brazilian Football Confederation, only 27 are women. That is, just over 10% of the total number.
“With the launch of the project, Esportes da Sorte will help women who dream of conquering a space within football,” said Ícaro Quinteiro, CMO of Esportes da Sorte. “Our goal is to help as many candidates as possible. We know that the evolution of Brazilian sport involves reducing gender inequality and strengthening female representation in the modality.”
