Athletes from the National Football League (NFL), the North American football league, could be punished throughout the 2023 season with suspensions because of their involvement with sports betting, for violating competition policies.
The biggest repercussion name is Isaiah Rodgers, who plays at cornerback for the Indianapolis Colts. He is already the subject of an internal NFL investigation for possible violations of sports betting policy, including his own team’s games. Rodgers admitted to the situation on social media in early June, claiming he takes “full responsibility” for his actions.
NFL toughens sports betting policy involving players
Recently, the NFL announced that it intends to strengthen the sports betting policy for all its players. Freshmen will attend educational sessions on the subject, while officials will personally visit teams to specify what is allowed and not.
Among the “key rules”, the NFL must promote some recommendations to curb new cases of punishments and even suspensions, including not betting on NFL clashes and not placing bets while in the training center or during activities with the team.

So far, the NFL has not revealed what Rodgers’ punishment will be or which other athletes may be penalized for engaging in sports betting. However, this is not the first controversy since the end of last season in February.
In late April, the NFL suspended five players for betting policy violations. Three athletes were sidelined for a season by betting within the NFL itself; while two others received six-game hooks for betting on other sports.
Amidst the controversy, the NFL released the full schedule for next season. The debut will be the meeting between the defending champion of the Super Bowl, Kansas City against the Detroit Lions on the 7th of September, at Arrowhead Stadium.
