During his intervention in the Senate Plenary this Wednesday (6), Senator Romário (PL-RJ) announced his intention to begin collecting signatures for the creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry (CPI) with the purpose of investigating the alleged manipulation of results in football matches in Brazil.
The senator argued that the institution of the CPI is necessary given the growing number of complaints about this practice.
Romário highlighted that, after the scandal involving a possible recruitment of players, investigated by the Public Ministry of Goiás, new revelations emerged.
He highlighted a report from Sportradar, a company specializing in sports betting, recently released, which points to 109 matches suspected of being manipulated last year alone.
Senator Romário’s position
Senator Romário stated: “This places us as the country with the largest number of games analyzed in these circumstances. After years of a completely deregulated market and given the immense amount of resources moved by this sector.
Therefore, we can no longer ignore what is happening to the integrity of our sport, which is the number one and most popular sport on the planet, everyone’s passion, not just Brazilians.”
The senator emphasized that the country’s betting market lacks regulation and that “we can no longer turn a blind eye” to this situation that affects the integrity of the sport. He requested the support of fellow senators for the establishment of the CPI.
“I am convinced that our president [of the Senate], Rodrigo Pacheco, will respond positively, will open this CPI. In this way, we will bring to this Congress, especially to the Senate, individuals and entities fully involved.
Including players, managers and, of course, even these bookmakers. So that we can understand, once and for all, what is behind all this”, he concluded.
At the end, Romário asked for support from the other senators and stated that he would start collecting signatures for the CPI.
