Chamber of Deputies Maintains Bolsonaro’s Vetoes on the TV Draw Law

The Chamber of Deputies maintained, by 369 votes to 61, the vetoes of the President of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro as it releases the draws on open TV and radio.

The rule was sanctioned, with vetoes, by the president even in July, after Congress approved the provisional measure on the matter edited by Bolsonaro himself. At the request of the Ministry of Justice, the president removed some parts of the project.

Bolsonaro vetoed the registration of people for the telephone draws and established that consumers interested in participating would need to register in an application, with the insertion of the CPF.

Due to the danger of fraud and money laundering, the president also removed an item that freed TV channels from requesting authorization from the Ministry of Economy to promote contests with prizes up to R $ 10,000.

With the resolution in the Chamber of Deputies for maintaining these vetoes, the Senate will not have to evaluate the parts of the projects vetoed by the president of the republic.

Government defended that sweepstakes on TV could help in the resumption of the sector

When the government forwarded the provisional measure to the Federal Congress, the raffles on TV and radio could encourage investment in broadcasting technology, increase the audience of broadcasters and attract the attention of viewers.

“The current market for Brazilian open television networks has been going through a period of prolonged economic crisis […]. The exploitation of commercial promotions by the concessionaires of the broadcasting service of sounds and images, as long as it is properly delimited and regulated, can have positive impacts on the economy and job creation ”, said the government in a note at the time.

In addition, participation is limited to people over 18. “In view of the prolonged period of economic crisis, the project represents an important alternative for the current market of Brazilian broadcast television networks, since it will make it possible to make it more competitive in the industry, resulting in positive impacts on the economy and generation of jobs ”, appears in the official statement.
