An official announcement is expected soon regarding a Formula 1 race on the Las Vegas Strip, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Talks between local authorities and Formula 1 have been taking place since 2021.
The 2022 schedule for the world’s premier motorsport series is already set, meaning the earliest the race can take place on the Strip is in 2023.
Parts of Las Vegas Boulevard would understandably be temporarily closed to accommodate the race layout. Early plans suggest riders could race in and around the Strip, including areas around the Bellagio.
Last Las Vegas race took place at Caesars Palace in 81/82
The existing pedestrian walkways on the Strip would provide privileged vantage points for spectators, thus eliminating the need for Formula 1 to build temporary grandstands.
The organization, however, would be responsible for temporary road improvements, such as adding concrete barriers along Las Vegas Boulevard.
The Las Vegas Strip race was reportedly not going to be a one-time event, with organizers planning to not only make it a regular race on the sport’s calendar, but introduce it as F1’s premier event.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, any race taking place in Las Vegas would mark the first time the region has hosted such a race since the 1981/82 event, held in the parking lot of Caesars Palace.
