The latest news about an alleged manipulation of results in three games of the last round of Serie B of the Brazilian Championship last year generated a fierce debate about what measures the State could take to inhibit irregular practices and regulate the sports betting sector.

Jornal Opção published an article with the senator, Jorge Kajuru (PSB), who analyzed the possibility of creating rules to regulate this industry. “I am preparing a bill to be filed in the Senate on the 27th that will deal with this topic. We need to create clear and safe rules for everyone involved and curb criminal practices in football”, he declared in an interview with the news website.

The senator reported that he is concerned not only with sports partnerships through bookmakers, but also with the results of Sociedade Anônima do Futebol (SAFs) for Brazilian teams. “I was always afraid of clubs becoming companies. We have seen the bankruptcy of many Brazilian clubs from north to south of the country”.

“This type of partnership also needs to be regulated. We need to be transparent in terms of the contract between funders and clubs. I do not agree with handing most of the shares into the hands of these businessmen”, he added.

According to Kajuru, the directors also need to be held accountable for harmful gestures to the clubs. “We need to create laws to hold disastrous actions in football accountable. I think that a SAF should have an equal percentage in the shares of a club and that it could only sign this partnership for a certain period of time, which was no longer than 10 years”, he commented.

Regarding the betting market, he revealed that he intends to file a bill in the Senate on February 27th. “I already have a bill ready for this topic as well. It is inadmissible to have 12-year-old children spending their father’s credit card to make big bets. I will present this project in the first session of the Senate on the 27th”, he said.

In addition, the senator claimed that the tax burden needs to be fair and passed on to Sports, Health and Education projects. “These taxes should be reverted to Sports, Health and Education. Sports Initiation across the country should receive this money”, he highlighted.

Kajuru also evaluated the possibility of legalizing other types of games

Kajuru also spoke about the legalization of other types of games, such as casinos, bingos and slot machines. “I do have that fear, because we have seen in the recent past senators going to Las Vegas. What we need is a majority to stop this tragedy. There are Casinos all over the world, but imagine a Casino in Pirenópolis. Who would own it? A former governor, criminals or bookies?”, he concluded.
