Gambling is part of Brazilian daily life, and there is even a specific and widespread term for it: ‘fazer uma fezinha’. Lotteries record records year after year and the online betting sector has grown significantly since legalization in 2018.

On average, Brazilians spend R$58 monthly on some type of game or bet, be it table games, scratch cards, lottery, slots, among others.

The information is part of a study carried out by Instituto QualiBest, in partnership with ENV Media. According to the survey, three out of four internet users are gambling enthusiasts.

The survey indicated that the average amount of expenses also varies according to the age and income of Brazilians, reaching 80 reais in classes AB and among the youngest section of the population.

It should be noted that betting games are only available to adults.

Lottery bet at the top of the Brazilian ranking

Lotteries are the most famous betting models, mentioned by 58% of internet users. However, a third of those interviewed said they place sports bets.

Men (39%) and younger people (45%) are those who bet the most on this modality, while older people bet the least (20%).

According to the study, three out of four bettors claim to have already tried their luck in online betting. The main reason for doing something is emotion, while 38% say they bet at least once a week.

Furthermore, Brazilians invest more than an hour weekly in this practice.

For Fábia Duarte, service and planning manager at Instituto QualiBest, the research shows that the online betting and gaming market seems very promising, especially among younger people.

“The study showed that there is still a lot to work on in the bettor’s feeling of security, especially among older people. There is also a lot to grow among women if betting is not restricted to sports”, she noted.

Regulation and responsible gaming

The study reinforces that Brazilians still need further clarification about these activities.

In relation to the regulatory process, more than half of internet users have little or no information about the rules, which helps explain the insecurity in positioning themselves as to whether betting is a healthy and safe form of entertainment.
