Spanish DGOJ releases financial report on gaming revenue in the 3rd quarter 2023

Spain‘s General Directorate for Gaming Regulation (DGOJ) has released its financial report for the third quarter of 2023, revealing that the country’s Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) has exceeded €304 million.

With 78 operators covering betting, bingo, casino, contests and poker, DGOJ highlighted that the €304.26 million in GGR in the third quarter represented an increase of 23.6% on the previous year, but a reduction of 2.67 % compared to the previous quarter.

Deposits and withdrawals followed similar quarterly and annual trends. While deposits grew 11.87% year-on-year, there was a 0.45% decrease from the previous quarter. Withdrawals showed an increase of 8.07% compared to the previous year, but a decrease of 2.92% compared to the previous quarter.

DGOJ publishes details of each sector

When analyzing GGR by vertical, DGOJ detailed that €113.49 million came from betting (42 operators), €3.64 million from bingo (three operators), €160.26 million from casino (50 operators), €50,000 from contests (two operators) and €26.81 million from poker (nine operators).

Casino GGR reached €160.26 million, registering an increase of 25.25% year-on-year and 6.94% quarter-on-quarter. Standing out, live roulette grew 27.81% year on year, while slots showed an increase of 25.94%. Compared to the previous quarter, blackjack increased by 11.47%, slots grew by 8.09%, live roulette rose by 5.43%, and conventional roulette declined by 2.16%.

Poker GGR grew 22.03% compared to the previous year and 4.09% compared to the previous quarter. Tournaments increased by 31.34% year-on-year and 3.37% compared to the previous quarter, while cash increased by 2.06% compared to the previous year and 6.12% compared to the previous quarter.

Betting GGR showed a 22.66% increase year-on-year, but a significant drop of 14.86% quarter-on-quarter, with notable drops in pre-game betting (31.7% drop), live betting (0.26% drop) and fixed bets on horse racing (9.52% drop). Other fixed bets saw an increase of 46.08%.

Bingo GGR suffered a decrease of 0.95% compared to the previous year, but grew 2.91% compared to the previous quarter. Competitions registered a 56.64% increase year-on-year, but a 68.37% drop compared to the previous quarter.

Marketing spend in the third quarter

DGOJ reported that marketing spend in the third quarter reached €93.33 million. All this representing an increase of 12.01% compared to the previous year, but a reduction of 4.93% compared to the previous quarter. Of this total, €11.57 million was allocated to affiliation expenses, €870,000 to sponsorship, €47.68 million to promotions and €33.2 million to advertising.

Regarding promotions, the cost of bonuses included in the prizes was €12.28 million, while the cost of bonuses not included in the prizes was €35.4 million.

The Spanish regulator added that the number of new accounts totaled 322,709 at the end of the quarter. The monthly average was 107,570, representing an increase of 4.49% compared to the previous year. This represents an increase of 4.64% compared to the previous quarter.

The monthly average of active gaming accounts was 1,082,743, showing an increase of 10.61% compared to the previous year.
