The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) launched Draw the Line, an educational campaign for student-athletes about sports betting.
The initiative will be broadcast on social media channels. The action also includes a membership toolkit for educational institutions and conferences to access resources that extend the campaign to campuses.
The campaign debuted during the first week of the Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships, “one of the busiest times of year in the country for betting,” according to the NCAA.
Sports Betting on College Games Banned in Ohio
Sports betting is legal in over 30 states. According to the NCAA, more than half of college-age students have bet on sports at least once in the past year.
NCAA President Charlie Baker said, “Sports betting is everywhere – especially on college campuses – so it’s critical that student-athletes know the real story about how it can impact them and their ability to play.
We know that some gamblers are harassing student-athletes and officials. Therefore, we have to advocate for policy changes at the state level.
So, we launched monitoring tools around the championships to refer serious threats to authorities. The NCAA is doing everything it can to protect the integrity of the game and arm student-athletes with the truth about sports betting.”
The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) has banned individual bets on players in college sports following a request from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Ohio joins a list of more than 20 states that have market bans. Operators had until March 1 to introduce the restrictions.
Therefore, the decision came after NCAA President Charlie Baker sent a letter to the commission’s executive director, Matt Schuler, requesting the ban.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine endorsed the letter and expressed support for the initiative. Therefore, sports betting by players on university sports is prohibited from now on.
