At 11am this Wednesday (17th), Pacific Daylight Time, the iconic The Mirage Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip closed its doors. This renowned mega-resort has closed its doors, preparing for a new development.

A special ceremony at 9am local time marked the official closing of The Mirage. The night before, the erupting volcano, famous for its free nightly shows, made its final performance. Thus, the volcano’s final show lasted three minutes and took place at 11:30 pm.

Chris Jacobs, a Sacramento resident, shared his memories of watching the show for the last time: “We took a long walk from Circus Circus once just to see the volcano… Very loud, beautiful explosion, fire, steam rising was intense “.

Final Operations of The Mirage

As midnight approached, resort operations began to slow down. So the last call for alcoholic beverages came just before midnight, and most table games ended around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

The dice were rolled at the last dice table just before 1am. A dealer expressed her sadness: “I’m going to miss this place so much. Many people here are like family to me. I can’t believe I won’t come back here again.”

New phase: Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

In May, The Mirage’s owners, Hard Rock International, announced they would close the nearly 35-year-old resort for renovations. Additionally, they will add a guitar-shaped hotel, nearly 700 feet tall, similar to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

The new complex will be renamed “Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas” and is scheduled to open in 2027.

Thus, the closure of The Mirage will result in the layoff of more than 3,000 employees, with compensation estimated at US$80 million. However, when the new property opens, approximately 6,000 new jobs will be available.

Farewell on social media

Since the beginning of the month, The Mirage’s social media accounts have been reflecting on its rich history since opening in 1989. Finally, the most recent Facebook post thanks visitors for sharing their memories:

“Thank you for sharing so many memories made here at The Mirage over the past three decades. We have more to share and love hearing your stories of first vacations, family reunions and more.”
