The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on the Manipulation of Games and Sports Betting resumes its work this week. Recently, it was announced that Police Chief Daniel Mostardeiro Cola, general coordinator of the Repression of Corruption, Financial Crimes and Money Laundering of the Federal Police, will be interviewed.
The meeting is scheduled for this Tuesday (8), at 2:30 pm. This invitation was formalized by senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE), who initially suggested the presence of the general director of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues. However, Daniel Cola will represent the institution at the meeting.
The CPI, which was established in April this year, aims to investigate allegations of match-fixing in Brazilian football.
The commission, chaired by senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO), has 11 full members and 7 substitutes. Senator Romário (PL-RJ) is the rapporteur of the process, and he is also the first signatory of the request to create the commission.
Extension of the Betting CPI
Furthermore, the CPI for Manipulation of Games and Sports Betting was officially extended. This extension ensures that the team thoroughly examines all aspects of reports, strengthens sporting integrity and combats corruption in the sector.
Furthermore, CPI members say they need to hear from more people involved, such as player Lucas Paquetá, who the English Football Association (FA) is investigating.
Paquetá case
Lucas Paquetá, a player for West Ham and the Brazilian national team, is being investigated for alleged manipulation of results in football matches.
A hearing is scheduled for March 2025, where he will face allegations of deliberately receiving yellow cards in games against Leicester, Aston Villa, Leeds and Bournemouth.
Therefore, these actions would have been coordinated to benefit sports betting, violating the rules of the English Football Association (FA). If found guilty, Paquetá could face a lifetime ban from football.
In short, the 27-year-old player vehemently denies the accusations and declares himself innocent. During this period he has enjoyed the support of West Ham, who have expressed confidence in his integrity.
Despite the accusations, Paquetá continues to play an important role in his club and national team, but this situation could impact his career and reputation in the sport. The hearing will be a crucial moment in determining his future in football.
