Tourism Minister reveals he is studying the viability of casinos in resorts

Tourism was one of the sectors most impacted by the pandemic. According to the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), the loss already exceeds R $ 180 billion in the national market. Therefore, the debate on casinos was resumed as an alternative to help the segment’s growth.

The Federal Government is also promoting actions aimed at helping the sector, such as the creation of Provisional Measure 948, already transformed into law, which established measures for the cancellation and rescheduling of tourist and cultural services.

The Minister of Tourism, Marcelo Álvaro Antônio, in turn, is evaluating the progress of these initiatives and the entire process of resuming Brazilian tourism.

According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), there is an increase for the fifth consecutive month of domestic tourism. The Federal Government itself is launching a campaign encouraging people to “rediscover the country” and make national trips during this period of restrictions.

Marcelo Álvaro Antônio wants to find a casino model that “meets the country”

In a recent interview with Revista Hotéis website, Minister Marcelo Álvaro Antônio detailed the measures already taken and was also asked about the possibility of introducing casinos integrated to resorts and leisure centers.

According to data indicated in the report of Revista Hotéis, 93% of the nations linked to OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) have this business system.

The theme of integrated resorts has also been debated in the National Congress for years and has returned to the agenda in recent months due to the financial crisis aggravated by the pandemic.

“Obviously, the introduction of integrated resorts is a topic that needs to be discussed at this time in Brazil, with all the necessary responsibility. This business model is a reality throughout the world, and we are proposing a wide debate between the Brazilian Parliament, the inspection bodies and the population on the subject ”, replied the minister.

Marcelo Álvaro Antônio also revealed that his portfolio is evaluating the proposal of casinos integrated with resorts in order to find a suitable format for the national scenario.

“The Ministry of Tourism (MTur) has been studying the theme in order to support the best proposal for Brazil. We want to arrive at a model that serves the country, generating jobs and income, and that allows free competition between potential investors in projects of this nature. MTur believes that this great debate will allow progress to be made in a democratic and transparent manner, ”he said.
