The extension of the Bets CPI for forty-five days was made official by the President of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, in the plenary session of April 30. In this case, the last day of the initial period of operation of the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission.
The time is shorter than the 130-day extension advocated by the rapporteur, Senator Soraya Thronicke, from Podemos of Mato Grosso do Sul. However, it will allow the CPI to present its final result by mid-June.
The volume of information that the commission will have to process is large. According to Senator Soraya Thronicke, “We are dealing with more than 3,000 bets, bets that are providing currency evasion, money laundering for organized crime, which are bankrupting families.”
“And forgive me, I wouldn’t like to say this, but people committing suicide. It’s something that we, who are not addicted to gambling, have no idea what it’s like,” said the senator.
Since the start of its work on November 12, 2024, until now, the CPI has held 12 meetings to hear testimonies. In addition, it voted on 297 requests and received 135 documents for the investigation, including the Financial Intelligence Reports, known as RIFs.
These reports contain bank secrecy data from companies and individuals linked to the online betting market and may clarify possible links between bets and money laundering schemes and other crimes.

The Senate’s Bets CPI is investigating whether betting companies have links to criminal organizations and money laundering. It is also investigating the use of influencers to promote these activities and the impact of online betting on the budgets of Brazilian families.
In addition to diagnoses of the size of the problem and possible indictments, the final report will also include proposals to curb gambling addiction. The problem has been damaging mental health and leaving many people in debt. This is what the CPI rapporteur, Soraya Thronicke, anticipates.
